Captain Coward of the Costa Concordia

When I read on the internet the news about the Concordia and the coward captain, I was upset. I think in the history of shipping he is the most hated person right now, with reason, in Italy definitely.

I really do not understand how the captain could have abandon his ship, left behind the passengers and the crew.
A captain is not an ordinary person, he can be in panic, he can allow himself to be in panic. He cannot risks thousands of life just to do a stupid 'salute' to someone. He should have known to be close to the mainland can causes problem. Otherwise why is there a path regulation when everybody could go whither soever they want.

We have a natural and automatically trust to people like doctor, policeman, fire-fighter  and for example captain of the ship. We trust our life in their hands. We trust when something goes wrong they always know what is the right thing to do. We think, of course, that nothing can go wrong because they do their job and always think before acting.
And when unfortunately something happens they have to be calm and determinate and the first thought has to be to safe as many life as possible.  They been educated and trained how to act in crisis. To stand there and act in favour of people. That is their job. That is why we trust them. Putting behind the thought to saving their own life and risking themselves to save others. That is the definition of hero. Like the pilot of the jet that landed on the Hudson River.

The passengers and even the crew depending on the captain. I do not know much about ship policy, but definitely there is a rule that the last person how allowed to get off the ship is the captain. And there can not be any kind of reason to do otherwise.
And that is a very lame excuse that 'I fell into a lifeboat', of course total accidentally. I read many articles how passengers, staff and crew member tried to safe people. After the captain vanished  - and even before that, according to the statements - the crew and passengers have been trying to do their best.

The captain is also a human. He is not perfect. He may makes a mistake. But the worst and the most unforgivable thing he can do is abandon his chip. There is no excuse for this.
